Biography
Emperor Gaozong (reign name: Qianlong) was born in the thirty-second year of Qianlong's reign (1767). He was known as a prodigy from a young age. In the forty-seventh year of Qianlong (1782), he became a scholar (zhusheng). In the sixtieth year of Qianlong, he failed in the imperial examinations and thus decided to give up on an official career. In the third year of Jiaqing (1798), he lived at Jiang Family Bridge in East Gate, Jiaxing. He was a disciple of Yuan Ruan and was appreciated by Yao Nai. In the ninth year of Jiaqing, he lectured at Ji Shan Academy, enjoyed socializing, and had a good relationship with Yuan Mei. His calligraphy style was influenced by Huang Tingjian, and he was skilled in seal carving. He loved drinking, and his unique talent was painting bamboo and rocks while drunk. He passed away in the eleventh year of Emperor Xuanzong's reign (Daoguang) (1831).
